FAQ
- Q What is the Asia Design Survey(pilot project)?
- A
- The Asia Design Survey is the pilot project of the World Design Survey initiated prior to the Word Design Survey project that is planned in 2010 with participation of all the major nations and cities throughout the world. The Asia Design Survey pilot project is conducted with cooperation among some of the leading nations and cities in Asia to collate information relevant to the design status of each region to create a comprehensive design status report for the Asia region.
The objective of the Asia Design Survey is to develop a regional report that will facilitate the understanding of the design status and design policies of each Asia region in an international context.
We anticipate that the World Design Survey project will face numerous difficulties. Through the meetings among the initial participants, an agreement was reached to take one step at a time starting with easy to accomplish tasks to create more well developed World Design Survey.
We believe that the Asia Design Survey pilot project will not only become an informative regional report for the design status of Asia region but will contribute towards improved output of the 2010 World Design Survey.
- Q Which organization is supervising the Asia Design Survey (pilot project)?
- A
- The Asia Design Survey was originally proposed by Seoul Metropolitan City and planned to be conducted together with the member organizations of Icograda. Since it is the pilot project of the World Design Survey, the overall supervision of the Asia Design Survey will be done by Icograda.
- Q What is the role of Seoul Metropolitan City for the Asia Design Survey (pilot project)?
- A
- Seoul Metropolitan City will provide active support to Icograda to ensure successful completion of the Asia Regional Report.
Seoul has prepared and disseminated the Call for Expression of Interest for participation in the Asia Design Survey pilot project to the Icograda member organizations in Asia Pacific region. Seoul has also developed a website exclusive for the pilot project and it will organize relevant data and create the final report. The Asia Regional Report will be published under Icograda and distributed to all of the participating organizations as well as all of the member organizations of Icograda throughout the world.
- Q Is there sponsorship available for the Asia Design Survey (pilot project)?
- A
- Not a small amount of expenditure will occur throughout the course of research and data collation for the Asia Design Survey by the participating organization, but there is no financial sponsorship available for the project.
However, Seoul Metropolitan City will provide the funding for developing the website for online cooperative research, as well as for designing, editing and printing of the final report.
- Q How did the Asia Design Survey (pilot project) get started?
- A
- On October 19, 2009, a forum, participated by the executive board members and the secretariat of Icograda, as well as the representatives from Icograda member organizations in Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Taipe, Mumbai, and Hong Kong, was held in Seoul. Introduction on the design status of each region was presented by the participants and discussion was held with regards to design related issues. At this forum, a suggestion to conduct the Asia Design Survey pilot project as the Asia regional report for the World Design Survey was made to Icograda and the agreement was reached to launch a project for developing the Asia Design Survey Report through cooperation by organizations from Asia region that were at the forum as well as inviting other nations and cities to join in on the efforts.

- Q What will be the outcome of the Asia Design Survey (pilot project)?
- A
- The Asia Design Survey project aims to create an Asia regional report with detailed information that will facilitate the understanding of the design status and the design policies in each of the Asia region.
The report will include the significance of the Asia Design Survey, its objectives, scope and methodologies of the research, as well as the introduction of participating organizations and the design status of each region.
- Q What are some of the major contents of the Asia Regional Report?
- A
- The report will include introduction of the design policies in each of the Asia region in addition to 20 common indicators that will facilitate the understanding of the statuses of the design industry, education and culture sectors.
These design indicators were selected based on the experience gained through the development of the Seoul Design Survey 2008, which was conducted as a part of the 2009 World Design Survey pilot project. The 20 common indicators were also selected for the ease of gathering relevant data by the participating organizations.
(As discussed during the Asia Design Survey Seoul Forum held on October of 2009, there isn’t even a clear and unified definition of design yet and we still require further discussion on the categorization system for design as well as the scope of the design sectors. Therefore, the common indicators will also require more important and yet basic or systemized indicators. However, there’s a time constraint of completing the Asia Regional Report by April so the more realistically achievable indicators were selected.)
- Q What are the common design indicators?
- A
- The common indicators that will be used for the Asia Design Survey are as follows:
1~2: Includes the general definition of design and the definition (description) of the categories (sector category) of each region.No. Sample Indecators Remarks 1 Representative design sectors basic inquiries 2 Definition of each design sector basic inquiries 3 Design institutes that represent a nation (or a city) basic inquiries 4 National (or city) government's design related Guidelines basic inquiries 5 Design related professional institutes, organizations, and associations basic inquiries 6 Number of design specializing companies need statistical data 7 Revenue status of design specializing companies (revenue amount) need statistical data 8 Number of designers (employees) need statistical data 9 Number of design related patents registered among total intellectual properties (per annum) need statistical data 10 Number of design education institutes need statistical data 11 Number of professors in design majors need statistical data 12 Number of graduates with design major annually (bachelor degree) need statistical data 13 Publication of design thesis in domestic and international journals (number of publications) need statistical data 14 Design museums/galleries misc. 15 Design libraries/data centers misc. 16 Design specializing publications/magazines misc. 17 Design online portal websites misc. 18 Design TV programs misc. 19 Design contests misc. 20 Design events misc.

- Q Who will have the ownership to the intellectual property rights on the contents of the Asia Design Survey?
- A
- The Asia Design Survey pilot project is supervised by the Icograda and sponsored and supported by Seoul Metropolitan City. However, all the participants to the project shall immediately retain all the intellectual property rights (IPR) to the foreground information. In other words, the participants, including Seoul Metropolitan City, will have co-ownership of IPR on the contents of the Asia Design Survey together with Icograda.
The data pertaining to the design status of each region collated through the Asia Design Survey pilot project will be utilized for the development of the Asia Regional Report. The finalized report published under the authority of Icograda will be furnished to each of the participating organization first and then distributed to all member organizations of Icograda throughout the world.
Upon completion of the pilot project, all the data collated and utilized for the Asia Design Survey will be passed on to the Secretariat of the Icograda as well as to all the participating organizations.
- Q How will the international cooperation be organized and managed for the duration of the pilot project?
- A
- The Asia Design Survey is a joint research project to identify the design status of each region in Asia conducted as a pilot project for the World Design Survey project.
By agreeing on mutual participation in the project by the organizations from each region in Asia, the participants will be joined and recognized as a consortium with a common purpose of creating the Asia Regional Report.
The Icograda Secretariat Office will provide the overall framework and the participating organizations will research and gather data relevant to the design status of each of their respective region based on the common indicators. In addition, Seoul Metropolitan City will develop and manage the online cooperative research website to collate and organize data from each region. Seoul will also take on the responsibility of designing, editing and printing the Asia Design Report and distributing the report to corresponding recipients as mentioned above.
The cooperative relationship built through the Asia Design Survey pilot project is anticipated to continue even upon the completion of the project to seek new opportunities for mutual benefits among the participating member organizations.
